Did you know that every two minutes someone is injured in a drunk-driving related crash? On average, two in three people will be involved in a drunk-driving crash in their lifetime.
On March 30th, the Erick Police Department staged a mock DUI crash with the goal of teaching students about the dangers of drunk and distracted driving. Nine members of the senior class at Erick High School worked with various businesses and groups within the community to demonstrate what a full response would look like. These organizations included the police department, Erick Fire Department, Delhi Fire Department, Air-Evac, the Oklahoma Sheriff’s Office, and finally Whinery Funeral Service. The activity even involved applying gruesome makeup to the students to help the mock crash feel more realistic.
Retired Oklahoma Highway Patrol State Trooper Derek Manning also spoke to the students and others in attendance about the importance of wearing seat belts and the life-altering effects car crashes have on individuals.
With senior class graduation celebrations looming for students at Erick High School, the presentation couldn’t have come at a more appropriate time for the students.
“The reality is that teens die every day while drinking and driving,” said Erick Police Chief Patrick Strange. “We’re hoping you learn from these mistakes so it doesn’t happen to you.”
The Oklahoma funeral home received a certificate of appreciation for their involvement. They were also involved in this DUI awareness program the previous year.
While Whinery Funeral Service is committed to providing personalized funeral services to the Erick, Elk City, Cheyenne, and Sayre communities, the local funeral home also cares about keeping members within the community safe.
